Vulcain Cricket ref. S2323A
This is a vintage Vulcain Cricket reference S2323A in near mint condition. The Cricket, famously dubbed the “Watch of Presidents” due to its popularity among several U.S. presidents, remains an icon in the world of horology. This watch, purchased on July 23rd, 1964, will soon celebrate its 60 year birthday.
This particular watch stands out for several reasons. It has rarely been worn and is in fantastic shape, with the previous owner describing it as NOS (new old stock) and unworn. The rarity of this Cricket is enhanced by specific features of its unusual dial variation. Unlike other S2323A models (such as the one featured on Hodinkee) which display the term “WATERPROTECTED” above the 6 o'clock index, this particular watch is distinguished by the absence of any labeling on the lower half of the watch face. Furthermore, whereas most S2323A’s have sunray dial patterns, this watch is instead complemented by a distinctive circular-graining pattern. Lastly, it features an original signed “V” crown, whereas many Crickets do not. Also attached is a Shinola alligator strap complementing the vintage feel of the Cricket.
This watch comes with its original documentation from 1964, including the purchase receipt and various booklets detailing the Vulcain manufacture and the watch itself. We believe this watch has not been polished or serviced since it was originally purchased in 1964. While a collector might prefer to maintain the watch in its entirely original condition, a service could greatly benefit it if the owner wishes.
